Note the small door in about the center of the photo. There is an amusing story behind it. True or not, I do not know as it seems the Portuguese love to tell stories.
This is in the red light district, the only district to survive the 1755 earthquake which occurred on All Souls Day. Imagine how the Roman Catholics priests explained this!
Now the story of the door. Being a devout Roman Catholic country, prostitution was not looked on favorably and of course the police would then raid the area. Often there was someone watching for the police and would alert the population with a whistle. Police were on horses. The women upon hearing the whistle would run through the door which obviously was too narrow for the horses to get though!
